About the Summer Flex Leagues

All players from beginner to NTRP 4.0 level are welcome to join the Surprise Tennis Club over the summer in our fun, flex-style format leagues. Whether you participate in USTA spring or fall leagues, or are just getting into competitive play, these leagues are a great opportunity to gain experience or refine your skills over the summer months.

We offer men’s and women’s singles and doubles leagues, as well as mixed doubles leagues, for just $15 per league. The date, time, and location is completely up to you and your opponent! 2025 regular season matches will be held between April 28 and August 2 and playoff matches will be held between August 3 and August 22. See all FAQs below for complete information.

Leagues are played in a flex-style format, in which players are responsible for scheduling and completing the majority, if not all, of their matches within the league time-frame. Players are responsible for scheduling their own match times with their opponent at a mutually agreed-upon court location. Players are responsible for any court fees and bringing new balls. Please coordinate with your opponents on splitting costs if needed.

Summer flex leagues are not affiliated with STRC or USTA, do not require USTA registration or membership, and do not count towards any USTA rankings.

Summer Flex Leagues FAQ

How are matches scheduled and when do they need to be completed by?

Dates of play for 2025 will be April 28 – August 2 for regular season matches and August 3-22 for playoff matches. It is your responsibility to coordinate with your opponent(s) to set up the time and date of your match. While there are loose week guidelines, be flexible as some will be out of town and unable to play on specific weeks. Regular season matches must be finished by August 2nd for all leagues. Any incomplete matches will be forfeited.

The winner of each match is responsible for submitting match scores.

What skill levels may participate?

Leagues are open to all players from beginner to NTRP level 4.0.

Leagues may be split into divisions at organizer’s discretion to divide number of participants or general skill levels.

How will matches work?

Matches may be played on any date and time that works for you and your opponent(s) during the summer season.

Matches will be played as two full sets, with a 10-point Coman tiebreaker determining a winner if needed. No-ad scoring is preferred, but opponents may agree to play ad scoring if they’d like.

Best two out of three sets.

A 7-point tie-breaker (first to 7 by 2) is used at 6-6 in the 1st and/or 2nd sets.
A 10-point tie-breaker (first to 10 by 2) is used when each team has won 1 set.

See the Coman tiebreak procedure for details on tiebreakers.

How many matches will I have to play?

The number of matches will be determined by the number of participants in each league. There is a minimum of six participants required for each league. Leagues may be split into divisions at organizer’s discretion to divide number of participants or general skill levels. Matches will not exceed an average of one match per week during the regular season.

Can I bring my own doubles partner? What if I don’t have a doubles partner?

Doubles players may specify their preferred doubles partner in the Registration Form. If no name is specified at time of registration, partners will be assigned as needed using other players that have registered without a preferred partner.

How do the playoffs/standings work?

League playoffs will use the top three teams at the conclusion of the regular season on August 2nd based on the standings. Second and third place will play a playoff match and the winner of that match will play against the first place team to determine the league winner. All regular season matches must be completed prior to playoffs in order to qualify.

Standings will be overall wins/losses with the following three tiebreakers:

  • Head-to-head match-up (if applicable)
  • Season total game wins
  • Coin flip

What do the winners receive?

Winners of each league will be awarded a trophy at the end-of-season party on Saturday, August 23rd!
